It is very likely that part of that population came here already with a certain knowledge of Portuguese. The trip to Brazil could take one or two months depending on where you came from and again you were stuck with people speaking very different languages. So yeah there was some pressure that could assure that some of those people already came here with rudiments of Portuguese but not all of them. One of the biggest distinction even of prices puts to those people when they came here was if they could or could not speak Portuguese. There was this branding of them as Africa's Africans who did not speak Portuguese and Laginos could speak Portuguese.
