The Negative Connotation of Populism
The word populist was invented in 1891 to describe a brand new political party, the last great third party movement. Now it's viewed with a negative connotation in elite circles and is being used as a smear against Bernie Sanders for his support of Donald Trump. "This is also an intentional strategy to smear the idea that ordinary people should have any say in our government," says author Julian Zelizer.
