Odysseus was on his way to save his men. Hermes said he was the protector of human travellers, thieves, merchants and orators. If odysseus went there to get them, he was never leaving this place unless he listened to hermes. The olympian produced an herb here that if Odysseus ate it, then when the witch who owned this island tried to drug him and turn him into a pig like his men, his senses wouldn't be dulled.
