The Guardians by Ursula K. Laguin

Ursula K. Laguin via the guardiansons is a funny, thoughtful, acute and absorbing story all the way through. Morrie realizes that perhaps her new friends did not choose to offer her friendship but were forced to do so by the spell she laid upon them. Her moral anguish is that of anyone who honestly faces the responsibility of power and it is not soon or easily resolved. The magic system might be too vague or wishy-washy to people like us who just go off, people playing a PlayStation 2 game every time we encounter it in a new magic system.
