The Serotonin Hypothesis of Depression
The focus on serotonin in depression began with a tuberculosis drug. In the 1950s, doctors started prescribing Ipranayazid to target lung-dwelling mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria. Researchers discovered that the drugs blocked the animal's body from absorbing compounds called amines. These include serotonin, a chemical that carries messages between nerve cells in the brain.
