Gerald Canaus: Australia succeeded in stopping the boats and he is right also that the number of deaths fell dramatically. But conditions in Nauru and Manos were described by Australians who worked there as hellish, as torture. People committed suicide. We have the European Convention on Human Rights that says you can take people to a safe third country but you can't take them to a country where they are basic human rights and the right to claim asylum is not guaranteed. So the lesson for me from what the Australian experience is yes it is possible to stop dangerous journeys. And I fully agree with him that France should offer to the United Kingdom next week to take back anyone who gets into a
