CHAPTER

Grad School

I think up to your undergrad degree, everyone nowadays pretty much is required to have an undergrad degree for most jobs. But since grad school is optional, you start to look more into like the opportunity costs of things. So I feel like it's a little bit complicated now. My brother definitely got his tuition covered when he was doing masters at UC San Diego. His deal was really good because he T.Aed and they covered his tuition and he got paid.

So you become more of a multifaceted candidate for jobs as opposed to just going down one rabbit hole, I
Speaker 1
guess? Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 3
Yeah.
Speaker 1
So I was like, it's definitely a
Speaker 3
lot to think
Speaker 2
about. I think choosing to go to grad school is such a complicated process because there's so many factors now, right? Like, I think up to your undergrad degree, everyone nowadays pretty much is required to have an undergrad degree for most jobs. So you just have to pick one and then you have like a BA or a BS. But since grad school is optional, you start to look more into like the opportunity costs of things. Like if I go to grad school for two years, what am I missing out on, right? Two years of income, I'm going to miss 60 to like 100 K when I'm paying tuition and I'm going to miss out on the two years of work experience. Yeah.
Speaker 1
So I feel like it's a little bit complicated now. I think grad school is for free, right? No, no. Like as long as you teach and
Speaker 2
stuff. It's for free. Only some. Yeah. Only some. Only I think there's specific majors that have that and then some don't.
Speaker 1
I think they're my majors then like the STEM majors because I know for biology, chemistry, like all those STEM majors or for UCSB at least it was all for free. I think
Speaker 3
it's because it's a public school maybe.
Speaker 1
Or maybe. Oh, yeah. Actually, I don't I'm not. Yeah.
Speaker 2
Yeah, disclaimer, we
Speaker 3
have no idea what we're talking
Speaker 1
about. My brother, he definitely got his tuition covered when he was doing masters at UC San Diego. His deal was really good because he T.A.ed and they covered his tuition and he got paid. Wow. And I was like, that's so nice. How's that look? But you don't get paid that much for T.A. Yeah. But yeah, I think it depends because some of them you might not have the opportunity to T.A. or maybe it only covers like partial.
