Dicta is not strictly necessary to the decision, but can be very influential. If it's beneficial to your client, you might argue for a very narrow holding. Opposing counsel on the other hand would argue for a broad holding. All of this becomes binding on the lower courts, meaning they have to follow it in their own decisions.
