Sanctions started in the early twentieth century at the time of world war one, and they had a significant impact prior to that. Sanctions often are more effective against small states with small economies. Big economies is much harder, because they're much more integrated into the global economic system. We'll really see in the coming weeks and months and perhaps years, what the impact will be.
