The Word of the Lord in the Old Testament
In Genesis 15, the Word of the Lord came to Abraham in a vision. In 1 Samuel 3, again, we were familiar Sunday school story where Samuel is awake in an Eli after the second time. John has a pretty good grasp of certain ideas found in certain passages in his Old Testament. That's where you'd expect him to find it. This would not have been a blazingly new idea to people in the early church.
