Clodio was born into an increasingly militarized society in northern Gaul. The Romans handed over command of the border to warlords, Al-Amani or other barbarian descent. In this environment, lavish burials all over northern Gaul were seen as evidence of societal collapse. Clodio followed his father's example and joined an army himself.
