Godzilla, My Dog, Not Yours

The Thunder Lizard is an Americanization of a Japanese name. In Japan, his name is Gojira. It's two Japanese words braided together and the words are Gorira for Gorilla and Kujira for whale. So Godzilla's name really means Gorilla Whale.
