Popcorn really caught on in America during the 1890s as a novelty food found at fairs, parks, and expositions. Because of its low cost, 5 or 10 cents bag, it remained popular even through the Great Depression. Huge companies like General Mills, Nabisco, and Pillsbury all vied for the title of top microwave popper. But one kernel ended up beating them all. A kernel that popped big and fluffy and rarely ever failed to pop. That kernel came from a humble Indiana farm boy whose name was Orville Redenbacher.
