Fantasy is a genre that's all about setting. Some writers get sucked into the shiny glistiness of their world but end up with cardboard stock characters. Protagonist in fantasy are traditionally heroic, but can run the gamut as in any genre. Antagonist can make or break the logic of a story's plot.
