The Rise of a Formal Cemetery

In 1881, a woman named Rose Howe buried her pug fanny at Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn. Some people were offended and when cemetery administrators were asked to comment, they said Greenwood did not allow the burial of dogs. Over time, what we see is the human cemeteries then would sometimes add a pet cemetery division. But maintaining that boundary between what species was buried where was really, really important for a very, very long time.
