The book is actually an epic length poem of nearly a thousand stanzas divided into 16 books. The story begins with Parseval's father and his Saracen queen. He leaves her North African city to return to Europe. She dies of a broken heart after giving birth to Parseval’s five-year-old half-brother Firthiz.
