The Story of Denmark Vessy

Denmark Vessy was hung in 1822 for allegedly planning to slaughter the white population of Charleston, South Carolina. He and 34 other people were hanged over the course of six weeks; he is thought to have had a bit of a messianic Jesus complex. Denmark viewed himself as kind of a sacrifice for a greater cause: "Since slavery was wrong, it was moral to make amends for these sins"
