The Difference Between Hominid and Hominin

The closest living relatives of homo sapiens are chimpanzees and bonobos. We have a common ancestor with them that would have lived somewhere in the order of 8 to 12 million years ago. Now everything that is on our line, you know, going from the divergence point between chimps and humans at that last common ancestor has been called a hominin.
