The Story of Al Gibbons
As a boy, his mother taught him how to read. He reads the books in his father's library which are largely enlightenment thinkers. When he is 12, he gets a job on the ground trunk railroad selling newspapers and candy between Port Huron and Detroit. In 1861, the US descends into civil war between the Union North,. led by President Abraham Lincoln and the Confederate South. The country suffers national trauma on an unprecedented scale. But for Al, it is not all bad news as passengers want to hear of the latest goings on.
