The Importance of Sufism in the West
Sufism and a dervish are actually more or less the same thing. The word dervish brings to mind these 19th century pictures of whirling dervishes and howling dervishes in paintings by people like Jean-Léon Jairon who's very famous painting of a snake charmer appeared on the cover of one edition of Edo Tse's Orientalism. There is a sort of connection there with with Sufism so we've got this 19th century imagination of the exotic east which produced a certain image and understanding of Sufism that still exists today.
