According to John of Worcester, at some point in late summer prior to September 8th, the two fleets met. Frederick mentions that Edgar the Athling had decided to go south of the Humber along with a ship or two of his men. And they rode down the English forces under Edgar's control. The ensuing conflict was an absolute disaster, with virtually all of Edgar's forces getting captured and only the Athling and two of his companions escaping.
