The Virtue of the Small Republic

Montesquieu's influence on the US Constitution is pervading. He gives us key lexical vocabulary for describing our institutions and relations with one another. What he aimed at is not the virtue of the small republic though he certainly gives what sounds like almost a hygienographic phrase early on but that's not where he comes to rest. When he closes book eight he opens us to the fact that the small republic can't survive in a world of dangers, as George Washington describes in his farewell address.
