The Current Relationship Between China and Taiwan
Taiwan was not part of the Chinese Empire. The Portuguese who settled Taiwan back in the 17th century as sort of a trading post when they wanted to get to China. From basically what until from 1948, 1950 ish when the Chinese Civil War ends until 1979, the US recognizes the Republic of China,. aka Taiwan, as the legitimate Chinese government. It takes Richard Nixon, who was foaming at the mouth about anti-communism and anti-China and all this other stuff for U.S. policy to change.
