Aristotle believed that the heart's function was to spread vital heat through the body. For him, the brain was little more than a refrigeration device for regulating vital heat. An organ like a liver or hand can only be understood within the context of an animal's functioning. As aristotle says, an eye removed from its socket is an eye in name only.
