On May 7, the day of Ludger's potential drunken dealings, there was a general air of sulfuric chaos about St. Pierre. The volcano boomed and roared in the distance. Ash and cinders fell everywhere. Vermin and insects overwhelmed the fields. Livestock were sick, and birds fell from mid-air, dead in the streets. It was like something out of Exodus, the plagues of Egypt. Yet, incredibly, almost no one left St. Pierre with a few exceptions. Captain Marino LeBeouf had seen it erupt on at least four occasions.
