The Challenge of Inter Asian Understanding in the Early 20th Century

The presence of Buddhism and Islam in China formed the basis for a variety of engagements of southern and western Asians with China in the early 20th century. The sheer geographical size of China put together with two constraints on that of first hand sources of data gathering made it very difficult to get information from inland China. You know, unless you're sort of really well equipped expedition leader such as Count Otani Kazuya who led a series of expeditions to the Chinese Silk Road.
