At two thousand meters altitude, mexico city is far above sea level. Its bustling population of 22 million people are squeezed into a fifth of the area by mountains. Over millions of years, they have shed sediments into an ancient lake bed that now underlies all the construction. A lot of energy gets trapped in this layer which the city is built upon. There's big, strong shaking there.
