"I love writing these novels. I mean, they're my novels, so it sounds self-serving to say that," he says. "They're real to me. I can't think of doing anything else." He's always thinking about the characters and having them take up space and energy in his life. That leaves less space and energy for other people,. which is not a great thing for them, but it makes better, better characters.
