CHAPTER

The Relationship Between Diet and Sleep

Melatonin which is the hormone that promotes sleep is produced entirely from a dietary amino acid called tryptophan. Marie Piers' research suggested people who follow this diet were 35% less likely to have insomnia and 1.4 times more likely to have a good night's sleep. A Mediterranean-style diet is what exactly? It's higher in fruits and vegetables, fish, whole grains, it's lower in red meat, sugary carbohydrates, refined carbohydrates and it's a diet high in melatonin producing tryptophans.
