The History of Ghosts

In parisichology, hauntings are believed to be not actual ghosts, but place memories. The key characteristic of a haunting is that it repeats without much variation. So the Saint Toribio appearances don't fit the pattern of a haunting. What about poltergeist? Do they fit there? They're reported to use psychokinesis or mind over matter.
