Henrietta: The 11th century is a crucial period, irrespective of what happens in 1054. It's at that time that these differences become really prominent and asserted on both sides. In Southern Italy, you have effectively a power vacuum, because the Byzantine Empire is receding from Southern Italy. Norman adventurers are conquering the Byzantine lands. And Rome sees this going on. Oh, well, it's conquering them. They're conquering lands from the Byzantines. But do they represent the reformist tendency at the papal curia? Or are they just after their own good conquering territory and using that for their own purposes?
