The Importance of Idol Worship in China
Marco Polo spent time in the city of Yangtze, which is now Shanghai. He was overwhelmed by the commercial trade that flowed to and from China. In Don Ping, he says the locals had 84 different idols, each with a name and some unique purpose or function. Marco even says that he delved into this strange world when he employed an old woman to speak to the spirits to help him locate a lost ring.
