The Psychology of Human Development
Sigmund Freud was born in 1856 and during his life's work believed that humans are driven by mainly unconscious motives. He saw the newborn as a seething cauldron driven by selfish instincts called Eros and Thanatos. According to Freudian theory, a healthy adult personality is a dynamic balance of these three components. When psychological problems arise, it's because the psychic energy is unequally balanced. A sociopath will lie and cheat to achieve their aims and may have a very strong id or a normal ego but a weak super ego.
