The religious practitioners in Nazca society were shamans, not priests. They used hallucinogenic drugs to induce visions and gain control over supernatural forces. Most of the ceremonial scenes of the ceramic iconography described above were conducted by these individuals. It is likely that sacred places, such as sacred mountains, as well as paraphernalia, including panpipes, mouth masks,. animal skin cloaks and spondyloshell necklaces were part of this religious complex.
