The Story of the Maple

On May 1st of 1627, Martin decided to throw his biggest party yet by erecting a giant maple. In many ways you could say that it was a celebration of the return of vitality after a hard winter. It was probably influenced by other spring festivals from various parts of Europe. Puritans saw the raising of the maple as a phallic symbol and an example of the pagan worship of nature.
