General O'S Decision to Retreat in the Face of an Enemy

General dupont and his men had done the impossible, but they had paid dearly for it. One thousand of his five thousand men had been killed, wounded or captured in the battle. Amazingly, dupont captured over six thousand austrians. So by the end of the day on the eleventh, he had more prisoners under his command than soldiers. It was a glorious success for the grand arme but it probably should have been a disaster. Ironically, this victory led to angry recriminations at french headquarters. Some sources claim general mock was wounded in this battle. If true, that might help explain some of his dubious decision making.
