H index can be very useful for getting a quick impression of somebody, but you certainly have to look much further and look at the details. You should really not compare H index across very different fields. What about across continents and different institutional biases that may be present? I don't think that's so important. Within like condensed matter physics, I would happily compare H indices of people in the US or China or Europe or wherever.
