Vera Atkins: The Minister for Economic Warfare

Vera Atkins was a Romanian Jew that had worked in Eastern Europe. She came to the attention of Maurice Buckmaster, who then recruited her for SOE as his back office. Her job was basically to run that office with him, but also to recruit all the female agents that subsequently would be there. When they were going off on their missions from RAF Thamesford, flying off to France, or wherever it may be, she would actually send them off. There was nothing British about them, nothing foreign.
