I'd be willing to bet that that consumerist view of the lady probably rose at least a little bit after the industrial revolution. The church father the council fathers second Vatican II were trying to reclaim that universal priesthood not in kind of Protestant fashion Lutheran fashion but reclaim the fuller understanding of what the church is. I think that's really important and shouldn't be lost in even justified critiques of some more radical interpretations of the council.
