The Rise of Biblical Translations and Commentaries
Before Islam, you have many collections of Midrash. But there were presumably new characteristics, innovations that Islamic Jews or Jews living in Islamic periods and lands had within their biblical commentary. So the idea of biblical translation is one of the striking new features of the period. The first Hebrew grammars were written during this period. It's interesting because when Sadia describes his own translation, he sort of alludes he sort of hints at earlier translations that maybe don't sort of suit him.
