In May of 2003, just two months after the war began, George W. Bush declared mission accomplished in Iraq. In 2004, it was also the year the world found out about prisoner torture at Abu Ghraib. By 2006, there was a new war, a civil war, US and Iraqi forces versus various sectarian groups. Barack Obama ran on a campaign to end the combat mission in Iraq. But by 2014, the Islamic State had seized control of large swaths of the country. There's a third war within a war. And it lasts into the presidency of Obama's successor and then his successor. It is time to start bringing our troops home.
