The Tunnel of Love was a popular dark ride in the United States and Europe. The rides allowed couples to express affection without fear of putting themselves in harm's way. These rides also gave opportunity to people who didn't conform to society's concepts of gender and gender rules. They would slowly change over time, which turned out at an alarming pace.
