What Are Speech Act Verbs?

Speech act verbs are actions that a speaker is intending to have recognized. So, when I criticize a student,  I'm intending for them to recognize my intention to criticize them. And I've successfully communicated if they recognize that intention. Speech acts are these discrete actions that people perform with their utterances. But it's not the case that we're intending to perform a specific action with every utterance.
