The Selection of a Performer
iam going to play you now a recording of the arrangement of the quartet done by the russian conductor rudolf barshai. There's something deeply ominous in the air, but it rests under the surface. In one of the only outbursts of the movement, barcha gives a repeated line in the violins and the quartet to the snaredrum and trumpet,. creating a nasty, evil character. The music that shastakovitch writes here is totally appropriate for those two instruments. i think barsha gets it exactly right, and even maybe improves upon the quartet.
