The idea that the German civilian population didn't know about the Holocaust is a well and truly, truly discarded historical myth. It's easy to say people are garbage, but people are complex. Humans are a blank slate. I don't think they're inherently good or bad. And sometimes, what they turn into is fucking ugly.
