The first 100 million years of the solar system were pretty chaotic. The asteroid belt we think now is much, much less mass than it used to be. In total, if you took like all the asteroids and the asteroid belt and add them up, it'd be less than 5% of the mass of our moon. So there's not actually that much stuff out there.
