Theoretical Tools and Practical Tools

Theoretical tools are things that serve cognitive functions such as passport photos and MRIs. Art contains those forms of imitation as well, but it cannot be reduced to it. The Berlin Wall made no attempt at being a piece of architecture. It was a matter of mere utility, something to keep people in communist East Germany. A utilitarian wall has nothing to hold our gaze which repels us. But true architecture articulates the deeper meaning of what it means to ascend is articulated and celebrated.
