When Alan was 14, Sir Gaunt proceeded to Sir Percival, who was a great friend of his, and bespoke for his son the place of our page. Therewith he found the youth pleasing to the eye, and of a great willingness to Sir. So must we return to Alan, who is now in his way for many an hour. The night came on, and the boy traveled far, yet gave he no thaw to rest,. For he knew that he could ill forward to Terry, and that only with the best of fortune could he overtake the two nights in time to make early return.
