Scientist's receptivity to helmhos' work stemmed in large part from what they could get from it. Physiologists got something argumentatively, and physicists who did not yet see how they were going to get anything out of it. The conservation of energy enabled one to tell really cosmic stories in a convincing way that tied together a huge number of otherwise isolated phenomena.
