The Origins of Greek Temples
The earliest surviving temples of the Archaic period are much more complex than their geometric counterpart. Its rectangular cellar was surrounded by a row of columns on all sides, called perry-style from the Greek root perry, which means around. There could be multiple rows of columns forming covered walks or colonnades. Yet the basic rectangular ground plan remained standard, with very few exceptions. Their great love of symmetry also often led the Greeks to place a dummy porch at the back of the temple, to match the real one at the front. The whole temple was raised up on a platform, consisting of a stereo bait, where the lower level of the platform had stepped up to the style of bait
